Human nasal epithelial cells are able to secrete in vitro vascular endothelial growth factor. Transforming growth factor-beta1 upregulates this secretion. This suggests that vascular endothelial growth factor, inducing oedema and angiogenesis, could be involved in the pathogenesis of nasal polyps.
